Grant for demonstration system upgrade

Shelton Machines Ltd increase sales as a result of investment in an enhanced demonstration platform.

The Company

Shelton Machines Limited was established in 1971 and quickly gained a reputation for pioneering developments in textile equipment and machinery.  This transformed it into a market leading industrial vision systems technology company trading under the brand Shelton Vision.

What they do

The company create state of the art machine vision systems for inspecting web type material, primarily demanding textile fabrics for a wide range of end uses, including automotive interiors, automotive safety, aerospace, construction, home textiles, specialist apparel and general apparel.

The Challenge

Shelton Machines solutions represent a relatively large financial investment for their customers.  As each system is bespoke, sales are heavily dependent on the company's ability to demonstrate their latest solutions to potential customers.

They have found that by far the most effective method to create the right level of confidence is for customers to send them rolls of fabric which are then put through a demonstration system in their presence.  Customers can then spend time with Shelton Machine’s technical team so that they can fully understand the breadth and depth of the systems capabilities and the significant technical advantages it has over their main competitor which is based in Israel.

However, their demonstration unit was old and did not reflect the full capability of their systems, consisting of previous generation hardware in terms of cameras and PC platform.  It did not have the ability to run all the new software processes that have been created.

The Solution

Shelton Machines Ltd applied for grant funding from the ERDF Productivity and Capability Enhancement (PACE) programme towards the components required to build a new demonstration system capable of demonstrating their latest capabilities to full extent.

It was hoped that this investment in an enhanced demonstration capability would enable them to maintain their competitive edge, increase sales and take on new staff.

The Outcome

This investment has led to a substantial increase in sales, some of which are to key target global group companies and in new geographical markets. In addition they have had very positive outcomes from demonstrations that will likely result in further orders being confirmed.

As a result of the increased activity Shelton Machines have increased their staff by two full time people and taken on additional factory space.

The PACE support program has enabled us to embark on a major upgrade of our principal demonstration platform with significant increased capability and enables the full scope of the latest system features to be demonstrated.
